My experience = candids, posed shots and a few action shots that weren't planned.
Note to self: encourage people to run around a little, use your faster shutter speeds, etc, etc, etc. May seem like a silly request but does get that genuine smile to come through. Other smile tactic: telling people "ok, now be VERY serious."

Polaroids: A fondness shared by Andy Warhol and Gus Van Sant/The Oregonian
i feel a sudden need to drive to hours south to eugene (ooh. maybe we can stop by on our trip to patrick's point later this month).
i have a polaroid camera, but can't say i've done anything amazing with it beyond taking shots after shots after shots of candids. i recently used my last roll of film and need to look into getting more online. there are movements to try to keep this medium around as the digital age slowly pushes the need for immediate prints out of the picture. which i need to check out, here:

Love this story: Forest Grove boy's eye for photos speaks thousands of words for him/The Oregonian
His talent of recognizing color, composition and light are amazing. He seems unbounded by 90 degree angles, which is something people can get so focused on to make "the perfect shot." This is something I want to practice with more - allowing myself to be a kid and be more random with settings and angles and content.
I had no where near the skill he has at that age, but this reminds me of how much I appreciate now that my dad bought me a point and shoot around 5th grade. I was able to take some fun photos as a kid that definitely jog my memory in retrospect and that are of things an adult may not have been around to experience (playing with stuffed animals, slumber parties, cousins at family gatherings). With everything digital now, it makes it that much easier and cheaper to allow a child to shoot as much as they want (memory card permitting). It makes them feel like they have ownership of something, that they're creative and for the shy ones (like me), that they can hide behind something while being productive. It gives them an excuse to connect with people through the lens. Keeps them busy in the same way a Gameboy does, but with more interaction. To belabor the point: buy your child a camera!

color and light.
last night a few of us went down to waterfront park for the cinco de mayo (carnival? fair? festival? whatever - it had rides). i've been reading a little more about exposure and wanted to experiment with leaving the shutter open a little longer (these shutter speeds were between 10-30 seconds, except for the dots - those were just out of focus). i'd seen streaks of color/light accidently in photos i've taken, but rarely deliberately leave the shutter open or lens out of focus to "paint" with my camera. so...here we are. i was hoping to get some typical long, streamy shots of the ferris wheel but the lack of a dedicated tripod meant i'd have to do that later.

charlotte gainsbourg.
the other night, we saw charlotte gainsbourg play at the wonder ballroom. she was a great performer and had pure vocals - especially for her first tour. she covered a couple of serge gainsbourg songs and bob dylan's "just like a woman." most was from irm but she had a few from 5:55 that i loved. snapped a few from the center of the audience, some from the balcony.

today, my friend christine let me do a shoot. we went around 1 p.m., and she took me to an old russian cemetery in north portland. the sunlight, contrast of greens and blues, and of course, the beautiful model made for some loverly shots.

colors
these shots were taken with the manual canon ftb my dad passed down to me along with a few lenses. he bought it in the 70s. the colors and clarity with this camera are pretty fabulous.
